The city

Uberaba has its origin in the occupation of Triangulo Mineiro, which stayed under jurisdiction of the Estate of Goias until 1816, when the region started to has a precious importance, which consisted in one of the goals of the Portugal Crown. The governor of the Captaincy of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais articulated the building of an access road, which mission was carried by Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva Filho ( Anhanguera’s sun), who set up an expedition composed of 152 men, among which 20 chargers indians and 3 religious, and also 39 horses. It left Sao Paulo by the rivers Atibaia, Comandatuba, Mogi-Guaçu, Rio Grande, Rio das Velhas and entered in the State of Goias by the Corumba River. According to some reports of the time, the expedition passed through the land of Uberaba. This route became known as Estrada Real or Anhanguera which consists in an important way for the Portuguese authorities to implement the colonization, production and disposal of precious minerals.

In general, the exploration and settlement of the hole of Triangulo Mineiro took place as in all of Brazil Colonia, by the taming and extermination of indigenous populations and the black people in the Quilombos. In March 2, 1820, the King D. Joao VI decreed the elevation of Uberaba to the status of Parish. The Real Decree constituted in a great advance for the community, since it meant emancipation and proper management in matters of civil, military and religious order. It was the official recognition by both the Church and the Real Government.

In a short time, a select population of farmers, cattle ranchers and merchants, as well as other professions, met, which enabled the Provincial Government of Minas Gerais to create the Municipality of Santo Antonio de Uberaba in 1836.

The regional importance of the Village of Santo Antonio de Uberaba was so great that it was awarded the title of City in 1856, becoming an important commercial center, which grew with the inauguration of the Railway in 1889, facilitating European immigration to the city and the development of livestock zebu

In the twentieth century, the city demonstrated growth of agriculture, cattle-raising, industry and commerce, meeting the demands in economic, cultural and essential services to the population. Nowadays Uberaba represents a dynamic shopping center, productive agriculture, a diversified industrial park and a planned urban structure.

Due the historical importance of March 2, 1820, when the city was elevated to the Parish, the Municipality officially instituted this date to celebrate the anniversary of Uberaba. Congratulations to the Uberaba’s citizens whose in a harmonious way have fulfilled theis citizenship, preserving the cultural values of our land and valuing the quality of life of the population.

Gastronomy and Tourism

Uberaba – the city of Chico Xavier, with incredible landscapes, is part of the Touristic Circuit of the Lakes.

In the Triângulo Mineiro, Uberaba stands out for its economic wealth and construction in the eclectic style. The city represents a dynamic shopping center, productive agriculture, a diversified industrial park and a planned urban structure. The tourist potential of the municipality is incredibly vast, ranging from the exploitation of crafts to historical cultural heritage, whose religiosity is represented by the old Catholic Churches and by Spiritism, having as icon Francisco Cândido Xavier – “Chico Xavier”, the greatest medium of the last century.

The city also integrates the Touristic Circuit of Lakes and the Tourist Circuit of Triangle whose mission is instigate the development of sustainable tourism, establish and strengthen partnerships to generate business, promote the improvement of the quality of life of the community, preserving and enhancing the local vocations. In addition, the city fosters actions and events of receptive tourism, which opens up for both the tourist-guest and the business tourist, with the Convention & Visitors Bureau, strengthening the image of the city nationally and internationally. Uberaba counts with the infrastructure of hotels, clubs, parks, event center and a calendar with the main events of the city.

The surroundings of Uberaba reserve incredible landscapes of a unique green, endowed with waterfalls with clear and brilliant water as it is in the indigenous translations of the name of the city, where the paleontological site of national contribution – Peirópolis, also stands out. It is also worth mentioning that it is home to the Academy of Letters of Triângulo Mineiro.

One of Uberaba’s main tourist attractions, the Expozebu, is the biggest exposition of zebu cattle in the world. Held annually in the month of May, it attracts people from various part of the country and abroad. In addition to attractions as rodeos, musical shows and the exhibition itself, it serves as a meeting point to meat and milk production chain.

Uberaba, in recent years, has received an expressive and growing number of visitors and tourists who seek it for various purposes.
