Considering the goals of the federal institutes, the extension programs shall be understood as a space for the articulation of knowledge and socioeconomic, cultural and environmental realities of the region, where education, science and technology are linked together with the prospect of local and regional development, leading to the necessary academic life interaction.

The extension programs deepen the connections between the Institute and society, reaching alternatives for the transformation of reality by building and strengthening citizenship in a democratic and socially fair political environment, throughout guidelines aimed at meeting the demands which comes from different public policy which reaches social needs.

IFTM extension actions seek to comply with the principles of citizenship, fairness, justice, respect and dignity, striving for ethics in their institutional and interpersonal relationships, adding, therefore, institutional and social responsibility.

The extension programs express the interaction that must exist between the educational institutions and the community in which they are inserted. By exchanging knowledge, these academic and non-academic relations allow the development of projects that can benefit both society and educational institutions.

Furthermore, it contributes to the process of raising awareness and to the promotion of changes, and its multidisciplinary approach enables the exchange of knowledge and the reformulation of already learned concepts.

Thereby, the professional formation of citizens takes place and it is increasingly intensified along with the society as a privileged space of knowledge production, and well as the overcoming of social exclusion and existing social inequalities, which occur both through information sharing and availability of services.

Thus, the idea of extension is associated to the concept that the knowledge generated by educational institutions must necessarily have the intention to transform social reality, intervening on its weaknesses instead of restraining actions to the formation of regular students of the institution.

The educational institution has the opportunity to bring the knowledge it holds to the community through extension programs acting as a knowledge socializing and democratizing board, going beyond the traditional perception of knowledge dissemination, service delivery and cultural diffusion. There is the effective participation of the community in the actions of the educational institution itself and therefore the production of knowledge through extension is made by means of exchanging systematic, scholarly and popular knowledge.
